The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has voiced strong support in Parliament for an updated review of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project by the Auditor-General.
This motion put forward by Shadow Minister for Major Projects, Evan Mulholland MP, asks the Auditor-General’s office to update their 2022 report to examine the SRL East project, in light of new information and financial concerns.
The motion received the support of the Legislative Council, with 22 votes to 17.
It comes after recent concerns raised by Infrastructure Australia and the significant financial implications highlighted in the Commonwealth budget.
“Infrastructure Australia’s recent report raised serious concerns about the Suburban Rail Loop project,” Ms Broad said.
“With the Commonwealth budget recently revealing a $9.5 billion shortfall, it is crucial that we reassess the viability and funding of this project.”
Ms Broad emphasised the importance of the Auditor-General’s role in providing independent assurance to the Victorian Parliament and community.
“The Auditor-General is an independent officer of the Victorian Parliament, supported by around 185 staff. They provide assurance about how effectively public sector agencies are providing services and using public money,” she said.
The Parliamentary Budget Office has estimated that the project could cost more than $200 billion, with the Victorian Auditor-General’s previous report finding that it would cost Melburnians more than it benefits them.
Ms Broad also highlighted the financial strain on the state, with the state debt heading towards $188 billion and interest repayments of $26 million every single day by 2027–28.
“We support public transport, but we also support good management of taxpayers’ money. The Allan Labor Government cannot even answer basic questions about how this project will be funded,” she said.
Ms Broad called on the government to pause the SRL project and consider the infrastructure needs of the entire state, not just Melbourne.
“Victoria needs to become a state of cities, not a city-state,” Ms Broad said.
