The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has urged residents to be on alert after the H5N1 bird flu strain was detected in wild birds in Victoria.
“It’s important to stay informed and report sick or dead birds without handling them,” Ms Broad said.
Ms Broad said anyone finding a sick or dead bird should not touch it.
“The best thing to do is to record the location, take photos or videos if safe, and report concerns to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 or online at AgVic – Wildlife Disease Reports
The likelihood of the disease appearing in poultry or domestic animals is increasing as disease activity in wild birds expands.
Poultry producers are urged to reduce any contact with birds who may carry the virus – and not let birds enter poultry houses or sheds, as well as restricting contact with wild birds, and if it is possible to house the birds to do so. If approaching a bird with symptoms, they should wear PPE
