A petition calling on the Government to consider all options to relocate the colony of grey-headed flying foxes from Rosalind Park in Bendigo has been tabled in Parliament today.
The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad sponsored the petition which attracted 2415 signatures.
The petition noted that the scale of the colony is causing significant damage to the park, including to historic trees, due to persistent noise, odour and faecal contamination.
The petition said this had resulted in significant loss of public space and is affecting residents, students, businesses, community events and local tourism.
Ms Broad said she had been approached by many locals who were concerned about the impact of the flying foxes.
“Local residents are very upset about the ongoing impact of this colony in the historic centre of the city, which is causing widespread concern” Ms Broad said.
A written response is due from the Minister within 30 days.
