Victoria’s much-anticipated Container Deposit Scheme is officially underway, and constituents across
Northern Victoria are embracing the opportunity to recycle and contribute to a cleaner environment.
The Nationals Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said how she was thrilled to see the
scheme underway.
“I am genuinely excited to see Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme become a reality. Many other
states in Australia have had this program for a number of years, so it is great to see it come to
Victoria.”
However, Labor’s poor management of the rollout led to environmental advocates calling for the
scheme’s introduction to be delayed.
Recent reports from the Bendigo area have raised concerns about the implementation of the
Container Deposit Scheme. Bendigo sites have been reported to be severely underprepared, with
limited trading hours, an entire site not being open to the public until later in the month and
additionally, there have been reports of sites lacking the necessary cash on hand to reimburse
individuals for their returned containers.
Furthermore, Ms Broad revealed that her office, while attempting to support and promote the
scheme by taking photos at one of the Bendigo sites, was denied access.
“My office, like many others, was eager to promote the Container Deposit Scheme to encourage
public participation and environmental consciousness. Unfortunately, we were denied the opportunity
to capture images at one of the sites. We were told we had to make an appointment to come back,
and that it had to be approved by various government departments.”
Ms Broad remains optimistic about the potential of the Container Deposit Scheme to make a positive
impact in Victoria, and she continues to support the program as a vital step towards a more
sustainable future.
“Labor’s track record on recycling in Victoria has been poor, and the State Government needs to step
up to ensure this scheme is effective. It has potential environmental benefits, as well as generating
jobs in the region and providing an opportunity for community groups to fundraise,” Ms Broad said.
“I also encourage charities, schools and community groups looking to raise funds to consider this
scheme, and invite supporters to donate their refunds or containers.”
