The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has highlighted the escalating state debt and financial mismanagement by the Allan Labor government, saying all Victorians need to know how their money is spent.
Speaking in Parliament, Ms Broad said there was an urgent need for transparency and fiscal responsibility.
Ms Broad said several key elements were a major cause for concern:
- By 2028/29 state net debt will reach an alarming $194 billion, with nearly $29 million in interest payments every single day, over $1 million every hour.
- Over the past decade, the Labor government has introduced more than 60 new or increased taxes.
- The new Emergency Services tax will raise an extra $3 billion, which will see household bills double, industrial rates go up, and businesses paying more. These extra costs will flow on to people who are renting as well.
- The increasing property tax burden has led to investments of thousands of new homes going elsewhere, and higher property prices.
- As the biggest taxing state Labor has placed a handbrake on business investment and employment.
- Treasurer’s advances over $12 billion show that Labor has lost control of Victorians money.
Ms Broad said: “The Auditor General’s report on the state of Victoria showed that the state has not articulated a clear plan for long-term fiscal management. Current strategies are short-term, reactive, and do not address both the existing financial challenges and emerging financial risks.”
“The next state election is in November 2026, and we have made it clear that a Liberal and Nationals Government will focus on responsible financial management and reduce taxes.”
