National Stroke Week this week is a reminder to act FAST if someone shows signs of a stroke, The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said today.
“Stroke can happen to anyone at any age and just recently I am personally aware of several people who have suffered a stroke,” Ms Broad said.
“Stroke affects thousands of families across our region. In Bendigo alone, more than 3,600 people are living with the effects of stroke, and 17.4 per cent of these are aged under 65.
“Across Northern Victoria, it is estimated that around 9,000 to 10,000 people are living with stroke, with close to 1,000 people suffering a stroke each year.
“These figures highlight why timely treatment, rehabilitation and ongoing support services are so important for regional communities.”
Ms Broad said this year the Stroke Foundation is urging people to become FAST Heroes by knowing the signs of stroke and acting FAST:
F – FACE is the person’s face drooping?
A – ARMS can they lift both arms?
S – SPEECH is their speech slurred or changed? Do they understand you?
T – TIME. Call ‘000’ immediately.
“If you or someone else experiences the symptoms of stroke, it’s important to call 000 straight away.
“A stroke is always a medical emergency. The longer a stroke remains untreated the greater the chance of stroke-related brain damage,” Ms Broad said.
Stroke Week runs until August 9.
