Essential palliative care services are being underfunded across Northern Victoria, The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has told Parliament.
Palliative Care supports patients, families and their carers – not just managing symptoms and pain relief for those who are terminally ill, but providing nursing support and advice, and assistance with equipment, respite, and service co-ordination.
“Residents have raised concerns about the lack of palliative care beds and services in Northern Victoria,” Ms Broad said.
“I read news reports recently about the cuts to palliative care funding and how terminally ill Victorians are being forced onto waiting lists for palliative care or being pushed into overcrowded hospitals, instead of receiving care at home, because of funding shortfalls.
“Palliative Care Victoria has identified significant gaps in rural funding compared to metropolitan areas, particularly in Loddon Mallee.”
“A new palliative care adviser has been appointed for six months to refresh Victoria’s end-of-life and palliative care framework.”
Ms Broad asked the Minister for Health to detail what targets and specific regional funding are being provided to ensure that people in Northern Victoria can access palliative care services when they need them.
Ms Broad said palliative care plays a vital role in supporting people facing a terminal illness, ensuring they receive compassionate, dignified care when it matters most.
“These services not only help manage pain and symptoms, but also provide emotional, psychological and practical support for patients and their families.
“Strengthening access to quality palliative care ensures that every person can spend their final stages of life with comfort, respect and the support they deserve.”
