National Stroke Week this week is a timely reminder to be aware of the common signs of stroke.
The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said it was also a time to focus on the people who survive a stroke, and their families and friends.
“Stroke can happen to anyone, anywhere at any age,” Ms Broad said.
“According to the Stroke Foundation, there are 3,648 people living with the effects of stroke in Bendigo and 17.4 per cent of these are under 65 years of age.”
Ms Broad has been a long-time supporter of the Bendigo Stroke Centre which had its funding cut by the Allan Labor Government in 2023.
“I am always impressed by the incredible work that is done by this committed group of people, who continue to do great things despite the lack of funding.
“They give much needed support and personal experience to stroke survivors, their families and carers.”
Ms Broad said it was important for everyone to be aware of the F.A.S.T message which is a quick reminder of the common signs of stroke:
F – FACE is the person’s face drooping?
A – ARMS can they lift both arms?
S – SPEECH is their speech slurred or changed? Do they understand you?
T – TIME. Call ‘000’ immediately.
“If you or someone else experiences the symptoms of stroke, it’s important to call 000 straight away.
“A stroke is always a medical emergency. The longer a stroke remains untreated the greater the chance of stroke-related brain damage,” Ms Broad said.
