National Stroke Week this week recognises the hundreds of northern Victorian stroke survivors who live with challenges every day of their lives.
The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has been a strong campaigner for the Bendigo Stroke Support Centre, which had its funding cut by the State Government in May last year.
“I am constantly impressed by the incredible work that has been done in Bendigo by this very committed group of people, despite the funding cuts,” Ms Broad said.
“They have given much-needed support to stroke survivors, their families and carers.
“They continue run on the smell of an oily rag and do great work in the community.”
“According to the Stroke Foundation, 80 per cent of strokes are preventable, but when they do happen, the most important step is to get the person to medical help (call 000) immediately.”
Ms Broad said it was important for everyone to be aware of the F.A.S.T message which is a quick reminder of the common signs of stroke:
F – FACE is the person’s face drooping?
A – ARMS can they lift both arms?
S – SPEECH is their speech slurred or changed?
T – TIME. Call ‘000’ immediately.
Ms Broad said Stroke Week acknowledged the selfless carers and friends who make a huge difference to survivors.
“I know several people who have suffered from stroke, and it can be hard for families to know where to go for support and information,” said Ms Broad.
The Stroke Foundation offers a wealth of resources to survivors and their carers. For further information visit www.strokefoundation.org.au
