One week on from the catastrophic fires that devastated Harcourt, The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has praised the community for an extraordinary response.
“It is difficult to put into words just how incredible our volunteers are, along with the overwhelming generosity of the community in the wake of this horrendous fire,” Ms Broad said.
“To those on the front line – the CFA volunteers, and those who turned out with private appliances – thank you for your incredible courage and tireless work. I’m aware that some people went to fight the fire, saving other people’s houses, while their own home burned down.
“In the wake of these fires, the generosity and support of the wider community for those affected has also been amazing.”
Ms Broad spent time this week at the Harcourt fire donation centre, set up by the Harcourt Progress Association and said the community response was incredible.
“We started with an empty shed at 9am on Thursday and by lunchtime it was nearly full of donations. Offers of clothing, pet care items, food, toiletries and so much more has come in thick and fast, and it’s deeply moving to see.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to this amazing effort. It’s important to remember that it will be a long road to recovery and support will continue to be needed in the weeks and months ahead.”

Ms Broad said it was also important for people to access the wider help they need.

“This is a traumatic time for our communities, but help is available and it is important to reach out for assistance when needed,” Ms Broad said.
“There are a range of grants on offer for those needing emergency relief, as well as households and farmers. There are payments for prolonged power outages, primary producers, emergency payments and more.”
Further assistance is also available directly from local recovery hubs, including at the Castlemaine Town Hall, which is open from 11am to 5pm Monday to Friday, until further notice.
