The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria, Gaelle Broad recently attended the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference on “AI and Disinformation: Democracy in the Age of Deepfakes,” held in Singapore.
The event gathered parliamentary representatives from right across the Commonwealth to address some of the benefits of AI as well as some of the challenges.
The conference included keynote addresses, panels and workshops on the implications of AI technologies for democratic processes and the increasing threat that so-called deepfakes pose to democracies.
Speakers from the tech industry, policymaking and academia shared information on what can be done to mitigate the risks associated with AI-enabled disinformation and protect democratic institutions.
Ms Broad expressed her commitment to sharing the learnings with the Victorian Parliament.
“The Rapid advancement of AI technology presents both opportunities and challenges for our society. It is important that we, as legislators, stay informed and be proactive in addressing the potential misuse of these technologies,” she said.
Ms Broad said, “We need to ensure democratic institutions are robust in safeguarding against the emerging risks.
