Crime has worsened under Labor as the government scrambled to bring forward a ban on machetes, The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said today.
Ms Broad said the Allan Labor Government has had months to act on machetes.
“The Liberals and Nationals have been calling for serious action since November 2023. Instead, Labor chose to ignore the warnings, until public outrage over the horrifying attack at the Northland Shopping Centre at the weekend left them with no choice but to respond.”
Ms Broad said just last week a member of the public had to intervene to stop an alleged attempted armed robbery at a jewellery store at the Bendigo Marketplace.
“A bystander sprang into action after the man smashed glass at the store in what must have been a shocking incident for staff and customers,” Ms Broad said.
Police have charged the man with attempted armed robbery.
Ms Broad has repeatedly called for action on crime and for more support for police.
“There are still so many issues to fix regarding crime,” Ms Broad said.
“Yet my questions to the Minister regarding support for more police and PSOs remain unanswered.
“Whether it’s huge numbers of police vacancies unfilled, closing police stations or weakening of bail laws, Labor has contributed to rising crime statistics and behind every statistic is a victim of crime
“Labor cannot manage crime and all Victorians are paying the price.”
