The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has thanked the region’s volunteers during Volunteers Week.
Ms Broad attended an afternoon tea with volunteers at the Red Cross op shop in central Bendigo today.
Ms Broad said this year’s theme – Connecting Communities – could not be more fitting.
“As we mark Volunteers Week across Northern Victoria, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the tireless contributions of local volunteers whose efforts are the backbone of our communities,” Ms Broad said.
“Our volunteers are the quiet achievers who knit our towns together, offering time, care, and compassion without expecting anything in return.
“Whether it’s the CFA and SES members who stand ready in times of crisis, the Meals on Wheels volunteers delivering food and friendship, or the sporting coaches and club secretaries who keep our kids active and engaged — these are the people who help build a stronger, more connected society.
“In regional areas like ours, where many services can be stretched, volunteers are more than just helpful — they’re essential. They step in where systems fall short and offer essential help and support.
“Yet we must also recognise that volunteering is a two-way street. Those who give often gain just as much: a sense of purpose, connection, and belonging.”
Ms Broad said in a world where loneliness is rising, volunteering is a powerful antidote.
“This Volunteers Week, let’s not only thank our local heroes but also ask ourselves what we can do to support them,” Ms Broad said.
“Can we give an hour a week, join a committee or make a donation? Even the smallest effort contributes to the greater good.
“To all volunteers across Northern Victoria: thank you. You don’t just help our communities — you are our communities.
“Your commitment makes us stronger, kinder, and more resilient. Let’s continue building those vital connections, together.”
