Local school students have been encouraged to enter the annual Parliament of Victoria’s Parliament Prize competition – with a chance to win $500 for themselves and $1000 for their school.
Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said the competition was a great opportunity for students to have their say on an issue they feel is important and consider what they would say to Parliament if they were an MP.
“Entries are now open for students in years 5 -12 for this year’s Parliamentary Prize – all students need to do is submit a video of themselves presenting a Member’s Statement,” Ms Broad said.
“A Member’s Statement is an opportunity for elected members to make a brief statement in State Parliament on matters of interest or concern to them and the people living in their electorate and can be up to 90 seconds long.
“Students entering the competition can record themselves or use an animated avatar if they prefer.
“This is a great project for students to undertake on their own or complete as a class project with their teacher.
“It’s an opportunity to help raise the profile of issues in their community that are important to them, their families, and friends.
“My interest in politics came from an opportunity to participate in a parliamentary internship when I was a student, and I want to encourage more young people to get involved and learn more about our democratic processes.”
Students can win $500 for themselves, and $1000 for their school. Entries close on Friday 14 June.
