Nationals Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad says any reduction in maternity and ICU services at St John of God Hospital Bendigo would increase pressure on the already burdened Bendigo Health Care Group and restrict women’s options when it comes to childbirth.
Ms Broad says she was very concerned to learn the hospital was conducting a review into these crucial services.
Private hospitals are an important pillar in Victoria’s health system, and help alleviate the pressure on public hospitals.
“Our public healthcare system is already under extreme pressure, and struggling to cope with current demand as a result of insufficient investment by the Labor Government,” Ms Broad said.
“There are already long waiting lists for surgery, staff shortages and cost increases.
“The Bendigo Health care Group is the major regional hospital for much of northern Victoria and takes patients from right across the Loddon Mallee. These patients include those with serious illnesses and injuries.
“The Group’s own website says: ‘Demand on services is increasing rapidly with Bendigo being one of Victoria’s fastest growing regional cities’.
“Bendigo is a major regional centre, and the closure of St John of God’s maternity and intensive care services would be devastating to the wider region.
“St John of God has provided an invaluable service to Bendigo and right across northern Victoria for many years, delivering quality health care to thousands of regional Victorians, and I hope these services will be maintained.
“It’s especially important at times of childbirth that women living in regional areas have a choice.
“Jacinta Allan is the Premier and Local Member, and the State Government needs to take action to avoid a worsening health care crisis in the region.”
