Applications for the Victorian Parliament’s highly regarded Parliamentary internship program are closing soon.
The Nationals Member for Northern Victoria Region Gaelle Broad has urged interested students, particularly from regional areas, to apply before the cut-off date of February 9.
“The program is a 12-week placement for students in their third year of political science studies from a participating university,” Ms Broad said.
“Interns are matched with a Member of Parliament. They create a 6,000-word research report which provides the Member with valuable information about policy or matters relating to their electorate.”
Ms Broad praised the interns who took part in last year’s program.
“I especially want to thank Pascal Samfat from the Australian Catholic University for assisting me through his research into regional towns impacted by the 2022 Victorian floods,” Ms Broad said.
Pascal’s research report was titled: We Cannot Go Through This Again: Climate Change Resilient Recommendation for Flood Mitigation in Echuca and Rochester.
During the program Pascal attended public hearings, met locals in flood-affected towns and examined 875 public submissions.
Ms Broad said he visited Parliament regularly and shared the experience with his grandmother Anne Marie Samfat by taking her on a virtual tour of Parliament.
“It was great to celebrate Pascal’s success at the graduation ceremony with his mum Sharon and Aunty Dana.”
The internship program started in 1990 and has now hosted more than 1300 interns.
Ms Broad was a graduate of the program 28 years ago, which sparked her interest in state politics.
