The apparent fire-bombing of an Epsom tobacco shop is the latest in a shocking crime trend in Bendigo which must be addressed, The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said today.
“We need real action to address Bendigo’s disturbing increase in crime. What does it take for the Allan Labor Government to take this issue seriously?” Ms Broad asked.
“The Premier has been too slow to act on crime, too slow introducing tobacco licensing, and too slow with bail reform and banning machetes,” Ms Broad said.
The Epsom Tobacconist was badly damaged by fire overnight after a car rammed into the building and Police are continuing to investigate.
“This comes on the back of the recent violent attack on a security guard at the Bendigo Marketplace and reported bashings of young people in the centre of the city,” Ms Broad said.
“I have been contacted by residents who no longer feel safe using public transport, shopping in the city and even in their own homes,” Ms Broad said.
Just days ago, locals took to the streets in protest at the rise in crime, including protesting outside the office of Premier Jacinta Allan.
“The latest figures from the Crime Statistics Agency show there has been a 19.2 per cent rise in crime in Greater Bendigo.
“Stealing from retail stores, aggravated burglary and motor vehicle thefts have all risen dramatically.
“Whether it’s huge numbers of police vacancies unfilled, closing police stations or weakening of bail laws, Labor has contributed to these statistics and behind every statistic is a victim of crime.
“The Allan Labor Government needs to wake up to what’s happening in our state, crime is out of control.”
Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs, Tim McCurdy, said Labor had failed to protect locals.
“Jacinta Allan has failed to protect the Bendigo community by taking earlier action on tobacco crime,” Mr McCurdy said.
“We are still a year away from the full rollout of the new licencing scheme and inspectors, yet fire bombings continue to put lives at risk.
“Labor can’t manage money and the people of Bendigo are paying the price.”
