A push for a major inquiry into the bungled 2024 Victorian VCE exams has been shut down by Labor Members of Parliament
The Victorian Nationals and Liberals this week called for a full inquiry by the Ombudsman, as a list of the 56 exams impacted by the debacle was finally revealed.
The Nationals’ Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad said the bungled exams were very damaging to the thousands of students who face VCE exams after years of hard work.
“This is not just a once-off. There have been major errors in this system for three years in a row,” Ms Broad said.
“Minister Ben Carroll has been too slow to act on this important issue, and the marking of exam papers is well underway.
“Labor have asked their friends at the Australian Education Union to look into the matter. However, the Nationals and Liberals wanted to see a truly independent and comprehensive investigation.
“It’s been more than six weeks since the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) knew about the issues with the exam papers.
“VCE students and their families deserve better. Our teachers and schools deserve better.”
Ms Broad said an independent investigation by the Ombudsman would have helped restore integrity to the VCE assessment process.
“Students, teachers and families deserve to know exactly how these compromised exams will be graded, which questions have been affected and how their final marks will be impacted.
“Minister Carroll found out that the examination papers were compromised in mid-October but failed to take action to resolve the issue. Now thousands of students are unsure how they will be impacted.”
Ms Broad said she was disappointed Labor Members of Parliament chose not to support the motion for an inquiry by the Ombudsman.
“This is just another example of the lack of transparency we see under the Allan Labor Government.”
